Report: San Mateo County Has Five of the Dirtiest Beaches in the State

Careful about taking that dip, a new list is out of California’s dirtiest beaches and five are in San Mateo County.

Linda Mar Beach, Marlin Park, Erckenbrack Park, Pillar Point Harbor and Gull Park represented San Mateo County on the list, with some of these being repeat offenders.

“San Mateo County officials need to develop ways to capture urban runoff before it can flow into the ocean, and they should explore ways to improve water circulation in the channels around Foster City,” Heal the Bay said in its report.

Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles County is number-one.  Researchers blame bird droppings, and the city has since placed netting to help deter the birds.

The Tijuana River Mouth in San Diego County also ranks among the most polluted.

But here’s the good news – Heal the Bay gives 95 percent of all beaches in the state an A or B grade.
