The House vote to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has failed, with yesterday’s final tally at 214-216. Republican Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters ahead of the vote that Mayorkas had engaged in a “complete dereliction of duty” in his handling of the southern border. He accused the secretary of willfully refusing to enforce immigration laws.
Had the vote passed, Mayorkas would have become the first cabinet official impeached in almost a century and a half. Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green of Tennessee said he was frustrated with the outcome but pledged that Republicans will try again.
