480 high-tech surveillance cameras are being installed in the city of Oakland and surrounding freeways to help battle crime, the California governor announced on Friday.

The cameras can identify and track vehicles by license plate, type, color and even decals and bumper stickers.

Newsom announced the installation of the high-tech surveillance cameras on Friday, saying they will help the CHP fight crime in real-time.

The majority of the cameras will be used on city streets, with the remainder going on nearby state highways, according to the governor’s statement.

Opponents claim the technology infringes on privacy, but Newsom says this his is not a “Big Brother” thing.
