Gasoline is taking a long, expensive journey to reach California. Supplies are shipped from the US, routed through the Bahamas, then sent back to California.
California is importing gasoline with over 40% coming from the Bahamas in November. The roundabout route adds to already high gas prices due to state taxes. Adding fuel to the fire in the Golden State has fewer oil refineries, no pipelines from the Gulf Coast, and the strictest environmental regulations. With more refineries also closing, experts say gas could go up another five to 15 cents per gallon. California now imports about 70% of its oil, up from just 6% in the early 1980s.
