Six mothers who were among those killed in an avalanche are being identified. In all, eight people died and one person remains missing. The women who were identified by their families are: Kate Vitt, Carrie Atkin, Danielle Keatley, Kate Morse, Caroline Sekar and Liz Clabaugh. The last two were sisters. Families of the victims say eight of the guests on the trip were friends and experienced backcountry skiers. Two guides also died on Tuesday in the remote area north of Donner Pass. One guide and five guests survived the deadliest avalanche in California history. Hazardous weather is still preventing crews from retrieving all of the bodies.
State officials are now investigating the deadliest avalanche in California history as new details emerge. Cal/OSHA is leading the investigation since the backcountry tour company was a business that lost two employees on the job. Nevada County officials say the survivors frantically worked to uncover their loved ones in the minutes after Tuesday’s avalanche. Unfortunately, they ended up uncovering eight bodies. A ninth person is missing and presumed dead. Officials will remove the bodies when the weather clears.
