California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing backlash for an interaction he had with the mayor of Atlanta. On Sunday, Newsom appeared at a book tour event in Atlanta with mayor Andre Dickens, who is Black. Newsom said “I’m like you” and “I’m no better than you” before mentioning his poor SAT score and reading ability. Critics say Newsom was talking down to Black voters. The first clip of Newsom’s interaction with Dickens, posted Sunday, has been viewed more than 20 million times, with several commenters calling him racist.
