Governor Gavin Newsom is setting August 18 as the date for a special election to fill the remainder of former Bay Area Representative Eric Swalwell’s term. Swalwell resigned earlier in the day after reports he had sexually assaulted a former aide, and CNN reported additional accusations from several other women. A new accuser also came forward Tuesday, claiming the former congressman drugged, raped, and choked her. Swalwell has denied all allegations, but suspended his campaign for California governor this past weekend as allies and endorsing organizations withdrew their support.
