President Donald Trump has approved a federal emergency declaration as crews continue responding to the chemical leak in Orange County. The leak was first detected Thursday in a massive storage tank at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove. Concerns over a possible explosion forced approximately 50,000 residents to evacuate their homes at the height of the emergency. Fire officials now say the threat of a catastrophic explosion has significantly decreased, but the damaged tank still presents an ongoing public safety risk. The federal emergency declaration will allow additional funding, equipment, and federal resources to support local and state response efforts. Governor Gavin Newsom requested the declaration after issuing a state of emergency over the weekend. California has already deployed nearly 800 firefighters, hazardous materials specialists, and emergency response personnel to the scene. Officials continue monitoring conditions around the facility while crews work to stabilize the tank and prevent any further danger to nearby neighborhoods and businesses.
