With just five days until California’s June primary, a new poll from the Public Policy Institute of California is offering fresh insight into the closely watched governor’s race. Democrat Javier Becerra currently leads Republican Steve Hilton by three percentage points, while Tom Steyer remains within striking distance at five points behind the frontrunners.
Despite the tight race, voter turnout remains low so far. According to online ballot tracking data, only about 10% of eligible voters have submitted their ballots. Some voters say they are still researching candidates and weighing their options before making a final decision.
One voter said they wanted more time to review candidates’ proposals, while another admitted they were hesitant to “throw away” their vote on a preferred candidate they believe may not have enough support.
Statewide voter registration still favors Democrats, who make up about 45% of registered voters compared to 25% Republicans.
