Google is seeking federal approval to release up to 32 million mosquitoes in California and Florida as part of its “Debug” program, an initiative designed to combat disease-carrying mosquito populations. The project aims to “stop bad bugs with good bugs” by releasing large numbers of sterile male mosquitoes into targeted areas. When these mosquitoes mate with wild females, no offspring are produced, helping reduce the overall mosquito population over time.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mosquitoes are considered the deadliest animals in the world because they can spread diseases such as malaria, dengue, and Zika virus. Google researchers say the program combines data analytics, advanced sensors, and automation technology to expand the use of the sterile insect technique, a method that has been used for decades in pest control efforts.
A notice published in the Federal Register indicates that the Environmental Protection Agency is currently reviewing Google’s Experimental Use Permit applications under federal regulatory guidelines.
