California authorities say they discovered more than 100 dead dogs while investigating an animal rescue organization in Humboldt County. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office announced the findings Friday after executing a search warrant at Miranda’s Rescue in Fortuna. The organization promoted itself as a “no-kill” animal sanctuary and accepted more than 900 animals between January 2025 and this spring. Investigators launched the probe after receiving what they described as credible allegations of felony animal abuse in April. During the search, deputies uncovered the remains of more than 100 dogs on the property, raising serious concerns about the care provided to animals housed there. The shelter’s owner, Shannon Miranda, is under investigation on suspicion of animal cruelty and fraud. Authorities have not announced any arrests or formal charges at this time. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue gathering evidence and reviewing records related to the rescue’s operations and animal intake.
