The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for three missing passengers after a pontoon boat capsized near Alcatraz Island earlier this week.
Authorities say approximately 20 people were aboard the vessel during what was reportedly a memorial outing when a wave struck, causing the boat to overturn. Sixteen people were rescued, but a 79-year-old man later died from his injuries, and a dog also perished.
After 54 hours of continuous search efforts, the Coast Guard announced the difficult decision to end active operations, saying crews had thoroughly searched the area while continuing to hold hope for the missing.
