Sunset Boulevard on Track to Reopen Today

After eight days of around-the-clock repair work, a heavily traveled section of Sunset Boulevard is expected to reopen today following emergency repairs caused by a massive water main break. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power says crews remain on schedule to complete the project by late Friday. The roadway has been closed since July 16, when a 17-million-gallon water main ruptured near Palm Avenue, triggering a huge sinkhole that swallowed part of the street and caused widespread flooding in West Hollywood. The break also damaged nearby homes, businesses and vehicles, forcing an extensive repair effort. On Thursday, workers addressed a small leak that created pooling near the newly replaced section of water main. LADWP says welders finished those repairs at approximately 7 p.m., allowing crews to continue final testing and restoration work. Once the road reopens, traffic is expected to return to normal after more than a week of major disruptions for commuters.
