California Assembly Republicans have selected a new leader after voting Monday to remove Assemblymember Heath Flora from the position less than a year into his tenure. First-term Assemblymember Alexandra Macedo of Tulare was chosen to serve as the new Assembly Republican leader. Macedo previously held the role of deputy leader and now becomes the caucus’ top-ranking Republican in the Assembly. In a statement following the vote, she said she is deeply honored by the confidence of her colleagues and pledged to focus on common-sense solutions to address the challenges facing Californians. California Republican Party Chairwoman Corrin Rankin also welcomed the leadership change, calling Macedo part of a new generation of Republican leadership in the state. Rankin thanked Flora for his service and leadership during his time as caucus leader. The change comes as Assembly Republicans prepare for upcoming legislative battles over the state budget, public safety, housing, and other key policy issues.
