Long Beach is moving forward with plans to install 18 automated speed cameras across the city in an effort to reduce traffic fatalities and improve street safety. The cameras will photograph drivers who exceed the speed limit on surface streets, with citations mailed to registered vehicle owners after the images are reviewed by trained city employees. Officials say the program follows a deadly year on local roads. Long Beach recorded 53 traffic deaths in 2025, the highest annual total since the 1990s. Fines for speeding violations will range from $50 to $500, depending on how far motorists exceed the posted speed limit. Before enforcement begins, the city is required to conduct a 60-day warning period, which will start no later than October 4. During that time, violators will receive warnings instead of fines. Citations carrying financial penalties are scheduled to begin no later than December 3 under the new enforcement program.
