Los Angeles Metro is launching a new program that will pay residents to leave one of their cars at home and rely on other forms of transportation. The “One Car Challenge” is aimed at individuals and families in Los Angeles County who own two vehicles. Participants will be asked to park one car and use public transit, carpooling, walking or biking instead for five consecutive weeks. Those who successfully complete the challenge will receive a $600 incentive. Metro plans to invite more than 2,000 county residents who are at least 21 years old to participate. Transit officials say the program is designed to encourage people to reduce their dependence on personal vehicles, helping ease traffic congestion, lower transportation costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Metro hopes the challenge will show participants that traveling without a second vehicle can be practical, affordable and sustainable even after the five-week program ends.
