A French tourist has died after his vehicle became stuck in mud during a period of extreme heat in Death Valley National Park last week. Park officials say 68-year-old Pierre Michel Formosa and a travel companion became stranded on a remote road in the California park. With temperatures reaching 116 degrees that afternoon, the pair left their vehicle and attempted to cross the salt flats on foot to find help. Formosa managed to walk more than a mile before becoming unable to continue. His companion continued ahead in an effort to find assistance. Officials say the incident highlights the dangers of extreme heat in Death Valley, where summer temperatures can become deadly within a short period of time. The National Park Service urges visitors to carry plenty of water, remain with their vehicles when possible, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.
