Apple Maps is changing the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” following an executive order signed by President Trump renaming the Great Lake. The order applies only within the United States, meaning users in Canada will continue to see the body of water identified as Lake Ontario on Apple Maps. Users in other parts of the world will reportedly see both names displayed. Google Maps also made the change over the weekend, updating its U.S. maps to show “Lake America.” The naming change follows a directive from the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, the federal database that provides official geographic names and is implementing Trump’s order. The decision has sparked debate over the renaming of the internationally recognized lake, which borders both the United States and Canada. Despite the changes on U.S.-based maps, Canadian users will continue seeing the traditional name, Lake Ontario, for the time being.
