The city of Long Beach is declaring a local emergency as California prepares for what could be a strong El Niño season. Long Beach Mayor Tom Modica says the proclamation gives the city more flexibility to prepare for and respond to potential impacts if conditions worsen. Conditions are expected to peak during the winter months, when stronger storms could bring heavy rain, high surf and additional flooding to coastal communities. City officials say the emergency declaration will help Long Beach take steps to protect residents, infrastructure and property. Residents in low-lying areas are being urged to stay informed about weather conditions and be prepared for possible flooding, especially during periods of heavy rain and high tides.
