A new life-sized monument in Big Bear is honoring Jackie the bald eagle. The wooden statue was handcrafted by chainsaw sculptor Paul Waclo and depicts Jackie soaring through the air with a fish in her talons. The monument was unveiled Saturday during a ceremony at Fawnskin Freedom Park. Jackie was found extremely sick in late July and died in August, despite extensive efforts to save her. She became widely known through a 24-seven livestream of the nest she shared with her longtime partner, Shadow. The livestream allowed millions of viewers around the world to follow the pair and watch them raise their eaglets. Jackie’s death prompted an outpouring of support from viewers and wildlife enthusiasts who had followed her for years. The new monument gives fans and community members a place to remember the beloved eagle and her role in bringing attention to Big Bear’s bald eagle population. Jackie’s story continues to connect people with local wildlife.
