The start of October means a higher sales tax in Los Angeles County. Beginning today, the countywide sales tax increases from nine-point-seven-five percent to ten-point-two-five percent because of voter-approved Measure ER. Revenue from the temporary five-year tax will go into the county’s general fund and support healthcare services, clinics and public health programs. Essential items, including groceries, prescription medications and medical equipment, are exempt from the tax increase. Some individual cities will see even higher rates. In Pasadena, Santa Monica and West Hollywood, the sales tax will increase to 11 percent or more. The higher tax comes as Los Angeles County looks to generate additional funding for public services and healthcare programs. The increase is scheduled to remain in effect for five years under Measure ER. Shoppers across the county will see the higher rate reflected in purchases beginning today, although the exact amount added to a bill will depend on the city where the purchase is made.
