Republican lawmakers are calling for an audit of California’s “Next Generation 911” emergency system upgrade. The project has cost over 450-million dollars and is years behind schedule. Earlier this month, State Senator Tony Strickland introduced a bill to make the project more transparent. Republicans say more oversight is needed from the California Office of Emergency Services. Lawmakers want to know why Cal OES spent years on a plan that’s now abandoned, why and how it’s changing course, and what’s the additional cost. This is one of several recent audit requests. They’ve also asked for audits of other state programs, like the high-speed rail, homelessness services, and Medi-Cal finances.
