The candidates for governor squared off last night in San Francisco. Four Democrats and two Republicans who are polling above five-percent were invited to participate. Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco both argued California’s problems are the result of Democratic Party politicians. Democrats Tom Steyer, Katie Porter, Matt Mahan and Xavier Becerra all said they would fight the Trump White House. The next debate is on Tuesday and will be hosted by CBS.
Homelessness was one of the hotly discussed topics at the California governor debate. Republican candidate Chad Bianco said the issue is caused by other factors. The Riverside County sheriff blamed Democrats in the state legislature for not funding Prop 36 to provide necessary treatment for drug addiction. Democrat Xavier Becerra said he’d work to keep people from losing their homes, instead of ending up on the street. Asked to give a letter grade on Governor Newsom’s efforts to fight homelessness, Republican Steve Hilton said “of course it’s an F.”
