A political influencer is filing a formal complaint against billionaire Tom Steyer and his campaign for California governor. Maggie Reed alleges the Steyer campaign failed to inform her about legally required disclosure rules after paying her to meet with Steyer in March. Reed later created social media content tied to that meeting. She has roughly 500-thousand followers across Instagram and TikTok and is known for posting satirical political content online. Reed also accuses the Steyer campaign of falsely claiming she shared paid content supporting Steyer’s leading Democratic rival, Xavier Becerra. Last week, the Steyer campaign filed its own complaint, alleging Reed did not properly disclose compensation she received from Becerra’s campaign for sponsored political posts. The dispute has sparked questions over influencer disclosure requirements and campaign transparency during California’s gubernatorial race.
