Gas prices across the U.S. are slightly lower today, dropping by one cent ahead of the busy Memorial Day travel weekend. Still, drivers are paying some of the highest prices seen in the past four years. According to Triple-A, the national average for a gallon of regular gas now stands at four-dollars-and-55 cents. That’s up a dollar-37 compared to this time last year and only six cents lower than the record-setting prices seen in 2022. Experts say strong holiday travel demand, higher oil costs, and ongoing refinery issues are continuing to keep prices elevated nationwide. California drivers are facing the biggest hit at the pump, with the state recording the highest average gas price in the country at six-dollars-and-13 cents per gallon. Millions of Americans are expected to travel this holiday weekend despite the higher fuel costs, marking one of the busiest Memorial Day travel periods in recent years.
