Independent Congressman Kevin Kiley, who previously served as a Republican, will face Democratic challenger Richard Pan in the November election for California’s 6th Congressional District. Pan, a former state senator, secured the second spot on the general election ballot after advancing through the primary contest.
The newly redrawn district, centered in the Sacramento region, was created through changes associated with Proposition 50 and is expected to be one of the more closely watched congressional races in the state. Political analysts view the contest as significant because control of the next U.S. House of Representatives could hinge on competitive districts such as this one.
Kiley is currently serving the final months of his term representing California’s 3rd Congressional District. Following the latest redistricting process, the boundaries of that district were adjusted in a way that was widely seen as improving Democratic prospects. As a result, Kiley chose to seek election in the newly configured 6th District instead.
