Many of the Fourth of July weekend arrests in Newport Beach involved minors from out of state. Police confirm 402 people were arrested between six p.m. Friday and six a.m. Sunday. Videos show crowds scattering along the boardwalk and into homes as illegal fireworks went off. Most of the arrests were for refusing to leave the area after police declared an unlawful assembly. About half of the arrests stemmed from one incident on the Balboa Peninsula. Newport Beach police arrested about 60 people during the same period last year. This year, the majority of people arrested were in town from states like Arizona and Nevada. A gathering of thousands of people, reportedly organized on social media, led to fights and blocked streets. Fireworks were also launched at people, including police officers, one of whom was injured. Crowds destroyed the outside display at a supermarket as well.
