The future of Los Angeles’ popular CicLAvia events could soon be decided as Metro considers shifting funding to preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games. Since launching in 2010, CicLAvia has hosted 67 open-street events, temporarily closing major roadways to vehicle traffic so residents and visitors can safely bike, walk, skate and explore neighborhoods without cars. The events have become a signature community tradition, drawing thousands of participants while promoting active transportation and local businesses. However, Metro officials are now looking for ways to finance Olympic-related activities, including fan zones planned throughout the region during the Summer Games. Metro’s Planning and Programming Committee has already approved a proposal to redirect funding away from CicLAvia and toward those Olympic efforts. Supporters of CicLAvia warn the move could threaten the future of the popular program. The full Metro Board is expected to vote on the proposed funding changes during today’s meeting.
