Newport Beach police are increasing patrols after social media posts began promoting an “end of summer beach party” expected to draw large crowds this weekend. The Newport Beach Police Department says additional officers have been deployed in an effort to prevent a repeat of the Fourth of July disturbances that overwhelmed the city’s beaches. During that holiday weekend, hundreds of teenagers, many traveling from outside the area, flooded the waterfront and created widespread disorder. Authorities arrested more than 400 people on charges including fighting, vandalism, setting off illegal fireworks, refusing to disperse, and other offenses. More than 350 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies responded to help restore order and manage the crowds. Investigators also found that many of the visitors involved were staying in short-term vacation rentals throughout the city. Police say they will continue closely monitoring activity and urge beachgoers to celebrate responsibly while following all local laws and safety regulations.
