The city of Malibu is preparing to activate automated speed cameras along Pacific Coast Highway in an effort to improve safety and reduce deadly crashes. The cameras will scan rear license plates and generate citations for drivers traveling at least 11 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. The program’s public information and education phase will continue through the end of September before enforcement begins. About 21 miles of PCH run through Malibu, where more than 60 people have been killed in traffic collisions since 2010. In 2023 alone, the stretch saw 220 reported crashes, resulting in 93 injuries and seven deaths. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says speeding was the primary cause of those collisions. City officials hope the automated enforcement system will encourage drivers to slow down and make the heavily traveled highway safer for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Drivers are being urged to pay attention to posted speed limits as the city prepares to begin issuing citations.
