A kayaker was attacked by a shark off the coast of Malibu yesterday morning. Lifeguards say it happened around 7:30 a.m. near Paradise Cove. The victim was fishing from his kayak when he caught a shark on his line. As he tried to release the animal, the shark bit him. The shortfin mako then knocked the man off his kayak and bit him a second time. The victim was eventually helped by people aboard a nearby fishing boat, who assisted him out of the water. Lifeguards say the man was treated for his injuries, although his condition was not immediately available. Officials decided not to close the beach following the attack because shortfin mako sharks typically remain in deeper offshore waters. Lifeguards are reminding beachgoers and boaters to use caution around marine life. The attack happened in an area popular with surfers, swimmers, kayakers and recreational fishermen.
