Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee says the city continues to make progress toward becoming one of California’s shining cities. Lee delivered her State of the City address Tuesday, highlighting what she called several important steps forward for Oakland. She celebrated the city getting out from under federal oversight of the Oakland Police Department after more than two decades. Lee says ending that oversight marks an important milestone for the city and its police department. But she acknowledged that many Oakland residents are still struggling financially. Lee says she wants to help those residents and neighborhoods get the financial support they need. The mayor also outlined efforts focused on improving public safety, strengthening local communities and creating more economic opportunities. Lee says Oakland still faces significant challenges, but she believes the city is moving in the right direction. She says her administration will continue working to make Oakland a stronger place to live, work and raise a family.
