Construction is officially underway on a new light rail line connecting communities in the East San Fernando Valley. The four-billion-dollar project will run nearly seven miles along Van Nuys Boulevard, connecting Van Nuys to Pacoima with eleven planned stations. Metro says the line will mark the San Fernando Valley’s first commuter rail service in more than 70 years, providing residents with another public transportation option. However, the project has faced significant delays and rising costs. Originally approved in 2018, the light rail line is now five years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget. The new route is intended to improve transit connections throughout the valley and give commuters an alternative to driving on increasingly congested streets. Los Angeles Metro expects the East San Fernando Valley light rail line to open in 2032. Once completed, the project will become part of the region’s broader effort to expand public transportation ahead of future growth and major infrastructure demands.
