An appeals court is striking down California’s law requiring background checks for ammunition purchases. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals made the ruling on Thursday. The background checks for ammo law, passed in 2016, was the first of its kind in the nation. Its main backer was Governor Gavin Newsom, who was lieutenant governor at the time. Gun rights advocates and ammunition vendors sued to block the law in 2018. That led to an injunction from a federal district court judge in 2020.
