California Leaders Have Just Days To Decide On Gerrymandering

California elections officials are preparing for a potential special election on November 4th. It hinges on Texas changing its congressional maps to benefit Republicans. If that occurs, California will vote on new maps favoring Democrats. Lawmakers return to Sacramento on August 18th. This gives them just days to draw new congressional maps, prepare a ballot measure, and gather public feedback. They have until August 22nd to declare a special election. They also need a two-thirds majority in both the Assembly and State Senate to take it to voters. Meanwhile, the FBI is assisting in locating Texas House Democrats who fled the Lone Star State to block a vote on Republican-led redistricting.
