Governor Gavin Newsom and California state lawmakers have allocated one million dollars as part of last year’s state budget bill to remove the homeless from the State Capitol grounds.

This initiative claims it will provide shelter, rental assistance, and other services for the homeless congregated around the grounds.

There are an estimated 10,000 homeless people in Sacramento County and since 2020, California’s overall homeless population has increased by about 6%, compared to just 0.4% in the rest of the country, according to the Public Policy Institute of California

“As of 2022, 30% of all people in the United States experiencing homelessness resided in California, including half of all unsheltered people (115,491 in California; 233,832 in the US),” the PPIC found.

Sacramento City Council has already approved the plan, and the city’s Department of Community Response will implement the plan.
