The IRS apologizes to California taxpayers after incorrectly sending out tax notices ahead of schedule.

Due to the severe weather emergencies back in January, more than 40 California counties were granted tax relief by the federal agency.

“While the notice received by taxpayers says they need to pay in 21 days, most California taxpayers have until later this year to pay under the disaster declaration,” the IRS said in a tweet.

Victims of the disaster were given until October 16th to file taxes and make payments. However, the IRS sent tax payment demands and letters regarding penalties to some California taxpayers who had been granted extensions.

The mix-up panicked taxpayers, who flooded the IRS with calls and lead to hold times lasting hours.
