Newsom Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Restrict Gun Rights

California Governor Gavin Newsom is seeking to restrict gun rights through a 28th Amendment to the Constitution.

The proposed gun restrictions include raising the minimum age of firearm purchases to 21, universal background checks, a mandatory waiting period for gun purchases, and prohibiting civilians from purchasing assault weapons.

Newsom argues that semiautomatic weapons are now too sophisticated, rendering the Second Amendment outdated.

“If you can’t buy a beer, you shouldn’t be able to buy a gun,” Newsom said in a video posted to YouTube.

Passing a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate, making it a tough sell.

Newsom is urging the public to pressure Congress with a petition here.
