According to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau, San Jose – the largest city if the Bay Area – is no longer among the top 10 largest cities in the U.S. based on population.

It has now slipped to 12th place with a population of 971,233, with a decrease of about 50,000 residents during the pandemic lockdowns. Those who moved cited homelessness, crime, blight, and affordability as the reasons.

With an increase in population, Austin, Texas and Jacksonville, Florida, have surpassed San Jose.

San Francisco’s population stands at 808,437 while Oakland has a population of 430,553 as per the latest census data.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan told NBC, “To me, it’s a warning sign. We’ve seen the polling data prior to the pandemic. There was a lot of frustration.”
