Taxpayer Funded Drag Laureate Named in San Francisco, Will Cost $55,000 Over 18 Months

The nation’s first-ever drag laureate has been named in San Francisco.

Drag performer and nightclub owner D’Arcy Drollinger was selected to the position by Mayor London Breed.

The role lasts for 18 months, and Drollinger will receive a $55,000 stipend paid by the San Francisco Public Library “to support their work and community engagement.”

Last November, Voters in San Francisco approved the renewal of the San Francisco Public Library’s Preservation Fund. It was intended to ensure that the library’s services and operations would be funded for the next 25 years. The Preservation Fund is paid for by “less than 2 percent of San Francisco’s city budget and a quarter-cent property tax.”

“While drag culture is under attack in other parts of the country, in San Francisco we embrace and elevate the amazing drag performers who through their art and advocacy have contributed to our City’s history,” San Francisco’s Democratic mayor, London Breed, said in a statement.
