San Francisco Mayor London Breed is defending her choice to arrest drug users in the city. Mayor Breed has instructed the police department to arrest and detain people who are high on drugs. Once they’re sober, they’re offered treatment.

So far, more than 30 offenders have been cited. However, Breed says none of them have accepted treatment after being released.

Supervisor Dean Preston, who represents the Tenderloin district, questioned the effectiveness of Mayor Breed’s recent commitment to enforcing laws against public drug consumption.

Breed responded to Preston, describing him as “another white man” purporting to be a savior of people of color, and noted that her sister died of a drug overdose.

“You’ve never lived in it,” Breed told Preston. “You’ve never experienced it.”
