SF Begins Rolling Out New License Plate Readers to Help Fight Crime

YouTube, @KPIX | CBS NEWS BAY AREA.

San Francisco is starting to install its new crime-fighting tool.  About 400 cameras are going up at 100 intersections around the city to read license plates.

San Francisco Police Department Chief Bill Scott says the technology will help police find suspects faster, especially those accused of stealing cars or from stores.  Mayor London Breed says the cameras can play “an invaluable role” in tracking down criminals and holding them accountable.  The cameras will be ready within the next three months.

Piedmont police Chief Jeremy Bowers says they’ve been using license plate readers since 2013. The information collected is sent to dispatchers immediately.
