San Francisco will be getting a pair of giant pandas from China.  Mayor London Breed shared more about the big news after arriving home from her recent trip to Beijing to see the animals.

Breed is calling it “a momentous opportunity” as the animals will be added to the San Francisco Zoo as part of China’s Panda Diplomacy program.  The zoo hosted pandas as part of a global tour in the 1980s, but this marks the first official lease agreement for them to live there.  The goal is to renovate an existing facility so the pandas can arrive by next year.

There are currently only four giant pandas in the U.S., all of them at Atlanta’s zoo.
